F Visa

Foreign nationals may enter the United States as nonimmigrants in order to study. These students, who can arrange from elementary school students to doctoral candidates and persons engaged in postdoctoral studies,. should apply for F visa.

Documents required for a F-1 visa

  1. Nonimmigrant visa application
  2. Form I-20 issued by the student's school
  3. Receipt showing the payment of SEVIS fee
  4. Supporting documents regarding financial resources and the applicant's nonimmigrant intent
  5. Passport
  6. Photographs
  7. Application fee

Duration of stay
Foreign students are permitted to remain in the United States for the "duration of status." A student remains his or her status during the academic programs, plus periods of authorized practical training, and a grace period of 60 days to depart the U.S.

Family members of F-1 student
The spouse and minor children of the F-1 student may enter the U.S. in the F-2 visa category. The F-2 spouse may not work in the United States. The F-2 child may only engage in full time study if the student is in an elementary school or secondary school.
