Citizenship and Naturalization
 

What are the requirements for naturalization?

  1. The applicant must be admitted as a permanent resident.
  2. The applicant must have resided continuously in the United States for at least five years immediately preceding filing for naturalization (three years for the spouses of citizens).
  3. The applicant must have resided for at least three months immediately preceding the filing for naturalization in the state in which the application is filed.
  4. The applicant must have been physically present in the United States for a total of at least one half of the period of required continuous residence.
  5. The applicant must have the ability to read, write, and speak ordinary English.
  6. The applicant must have good moral character.
